Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Policy

Introduction

LCPS is committed to the continuous professional development (CPD) of its staff. This policy outlines the university’s approach to supporting and facilitating ongoing learning and development to ensure staff can excel in their roles and contribute effectively to the College’s goals.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and lifelong learning.
  • Ensure staff have access to development opportunities that enhance their skills and career prospects.
  • Align staff development with the strategic objectives of LCPS.

Scope

This policy applies to all academic and professional services staff at London College of Practical Studies (LCPS).

Definitions

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD): A range of learning activities through which staff enhance their skills, knowledge, and experience.
  • Professional Development Plan (PDP): A structured plan outlining an individual’s CPD activities and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • College Management: Provide resources and support for CPD activities.
  • Human Resources (HR) Department: Coordinate CPD initiatives and maintain records of staff development.
  • Line Managers: Support staff in identifying CPD needs and opportunities and facilitate the implementation of PDPs.
  • Staff Members: Take ownership of their own professional development by engaging in CPD activities and maintaining a record of their learning.

CPD Process

Identification of CPD Needs:

    • During annual appraisals, staff and line managers will identify development needs and opportunities.
    • Needs may also be identified through feedback, changes in role requirements, or personal career aspirations.

Professional Development Planning:

    • Staff, in collaboration with their line manager, will create a PDP outlining specific CPD objectives and activities.
    • The PDP should align with both the individual’s career goals and the university’s strategic objectives.

CPD Activities:

    • CPD activities can include formal education courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, e-learning, mentoring, job shadowing, and participation in professional networks.
    • Staff are encouraged to seek out diverse learning opportunities both within and outside the university.

Recording and Reflecting:

    • Staff should maintain a record of their CPD activities and reflect on their learning and its impact on their professional practice.
    • Regular reviews with line managers will help ensure CPD activities are effective and aligned with career and university goals.

Funding and Resources

  • Funding: The university will allocate a budget for CPD activities. Staff may apply for funding to support their professional development.
  • Resources: Access to internal and external training programs, online learning platforms, and professional development materials will be provided.

Evaluation and Impact

  • The effectiveness of CPD activities will be evaluated through feedback from staff and line managers, and the impact on individual and organizational performance.
  • Regular audits of CPD records and PDPs will ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.

Career Development Support

  • Mentoring and Coaching: The College will offer mentoring and coaching programs to support staff in their professional development.
  • Career Pathways: Clear career pathways will be established, providing staff with guidance on progression and development opportunities within the university.

Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure it remains relevant and effective in promoting the continuous professional development of staff.
